Flaking Mill
Flaking Mill
Steam flaking for animal feed is very similar to cereal, but not without many differences. The corn enters into the steam chest oftentimes through a steady stream of water prior to the steam chest. Corn then flows through the steam chest for a predetermined length of time, then entering into the flaking mill. The flaking mill is pre-set to flake a certain thickness. Direct to animal flaking, the corn flake size is very comparable to the diameter of a thumb nail and the thickness of a dime.
This process also improves the starch digestion and lactation performance in dairy cows, and weight gain in beef cattle. A successful factor of steam flaking is that starch becomes water soluble. Loss of crystallinity of the starch granule, and flake thickness affecting gelatinization.
Control is completed by rate/location of digests by gelatinization. Tough, bulky flakes with few fines are most ideal. Uniformity is not only important for appearance, but also for feed performance. A consistent flake enhances animal performance, whether beef or dairy.
In many locations across the country, and especially in the Southwest and on the west coast, feed lots and feed mills supplying dairies are experiencing the benefits of consolidating smaller locations into one, two, or three larger machine operations. Fewer machines means reduced maintenance and operating costs, more efficient utilization of existing space, and increased capacity and product quality.
The Ferrell-Ross Flakemaster Series combines superior flaking performance with rugged reliability and straightforward operation.
